Dynamic Attenuator Offers Novel Approach to Optical Power Control

LISLE, Ill. – The new Dynamic Attenuators offer a passive device approach to optical power management by controlling optical power levels and preventing network equipment damage. Based on a nano particle technology introduced by Molex Incorporated and KiloLambda Technologies, these new devices revolutionize optical power control techniques.

Developed under a grant partially funded by the Israeli-U.S. Bi-National Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation, Molex has packaged KiloLambda’s proprietary optical power control technology in an industry standard LC plug style attenuator housing. Dynamic Attenuators control optical power by limiting or clamping optical power at preset values, thus reducing optical power spikes or improperly set power levels from damaging sensitive receivers and equipment.

This new class of optical components offers potential system savings by eliminating complex power control devices, software and field configuration settings.

Offered in a standard LC plug style housing, Dynamic Attenuators can replace traditional fixed attenuators by providing more flexibility and additional protection during field installations. Unique features of the device’s mechanical housing include an internally spring loaded ferrule assembly that protects non-spring loaded interfaces such as those found on transceivers from mating damage; a thumb latch for easy removal; and a housing that fits and mates with simplex or duplex LC adapters and connectors.

“With the new and novel optical power control device technology of the Dynamic Attenuator, field installation and maintenance personnel can greatly benefit from decreased equipment damage and reduced start up times,” said Tom Marrapode, director of fiber optics marketing, Molex Incorporated.

Optical configuration options for the Dynamic Attenuators are initially offered in 0 and 10dBm upper power limits, with attenuation ranges from 5 to 25 ± 1 dB in 5dB increments. In addition to the Dynamic Attenuator, a line of standard fixed attenuator products utilizing ion doped or offset spliced fibers in the same housing will also be offered.

“KiloLambda is very pleased to be working with Molex to bring our Optical Power Control (OPC) Nanotechnology to the market place” stated Karin Golding, director of marketing, KiloLambda Technologies. “This partnership, with Kilolambda providing leading edge technology in optical components, combined with Molex’s global design, manufacturing, marketing and sales capabilities offers customers a perfect fit for a complete solution.”

The Dynamic Attenuators offer flexible power control solutions at an affordable cost. Parts are available for sampling in six to eight weeks.
