Molex's High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connectors and cable assemblies provide an uncompressed digital link between consumer electronics equipment and audio/video monitors. HDMI is a small, user-friendly interconnect that can carry up to 5 Gbps of combined video and audio in a single cable. This system eliminates the cost, complexity and confusion of multiple cables used to connect current A/V systems.

The HDMI Type D (Micro) connector is roughly half the size of the current Type C Mini HDMI connector, while still meeting all the electrical and mechanical specifications of the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) Specification 1.4.

Molex's HDMI Type D Micro connector is the handheld industry's smallest, commoditized I/O solution for consumer electronics and portable handheld-device makers worldwide. Developed by the HDMI Consortium, a group of companies that defines HDMI specifications, the new HDMI connector standard was designed to meet growing demands of high-definition (HD) and high-resolution content of the digital still camera, mobile and smart phone markets. A new technology based on a single digital connection was needed that could support transfer and viewing of HD videos, high-resolution photos and downloaded HD content from these handheld devices onto large, HD displays. The current Type C (Mini) HDMI connector was too large to support the newer and more compact designs of such handheld devices. Molex was chosen to lead in the HDMI Type D connector development and played an integral role in the HDMI consortium by proposing the connector design and specification.
