New Molex MPO Optical Round Ribbon Cable Assemblies Easier to Install

Greater flexibility, easier installation and reduced attenuation are among the advantages offered by new MPO Optical Round Ribbon Cable Assemblies from Molex Incorporated.

Compared to difficult-to-route traditional flat ribbon cables, Molex's MPO round jacketed ribbon cable assemblies are well-suited for parallel optic transceiver interconnection applications, patch panels, optical switches and routers, and data communication centers.

Stacked, 12-fiber ribbons in traditional flat-jacketed ribbon cables are prone to piston in relation to each other, causing attenuation in longer cable assemblies. In contrast, the Molex MPO Optical Round Ribbon Cable Assemblies feature multiple ribbons stacked inside a round jacket to provide a more stable, low-profile solution for complex, dense optical network applications.

"In designing this cable assembly, Molex developed termination techniques that maintain the round cable's unique routing features and robustly secures the cable to the MPO connector," said Tom Schiltz, product manager, Fiber Optics Division, Molex Incorporated. "More important, the ribbons are encased in a solid buffer core, which reduces fiber pistoning between ribbons during coiling, uncoiling and installation."

Currently, Molex offers the new cable assemblies in fiber counts up to 24 fibers, with higher counts up to 72 fibers to be made available shortly. Cable assembly pricing varies by construction type and length. Lead-time is between four to six weeks.
