World's Smallest Tactile Switch now Available from Omron
January 2007Schaumburg, IL Omron Electronic Components LLC announces the availability of the B3U series of ultra-small tactile SMD switches. Measuring just 1.2H x 3W x 2.5Dmm and taking only 75% of the volumetric space of similar models (9 cubic mm vs. 12 to 16 cubic mm), they are ideal for high-density packaging applications. The B3U SPS-NO contact configuration has a switching capacity of 1 to 50mA @ 5 to 12VDC with an initial contact resistance of 100m ohms max, and features dust-proof construction delivering reliable performance in harsh environments. These versatile switches are available in top or side actuated configurations, a ground terminal version provides protection against static discharge, and they can be delivered with or without a locating boss.
The B3U operates in a temperature range of 25 to +70 degrees C in 60% humidity without icing or condensation. They are fully RoHS compliant and the top actuated model (B3U-1000 series) has a minimum life expectancy of 200,000 operations while the side-actuated model (B3U-3000 series) has a minimum life expectancy of 100,000 operations. The operating force for the B3U-1000 is 153 +/-50gf and the B3U-3000 is 162+/-50gf; the release force for both is 20.3gf minimum. Applications include mobile phones, remote controllers, portable audio players, computer games, wristwatches, and computer peripherals.
Handheld wireless devices are continually being pushed for additional features while, at the same time, size must be reduced. The B3U requires less than 75% of the volumetric space as compared to their predecessors giving designers an advantage, said Cami Marsh Omron Electronic Components LLC.
